Banded Mongoose (Mungos mungo)

Pennington's Social Foragers

The Banded Mongoose is one of the most charismatic and easily recognized animals on the KZN South Coast. Unlike many other mongoose species which are solitary, Banded Mongooses are highly social, living in large "troops" that can number up to 30 individuals or more.

They are instantly identifiable by the series of dark, transverse bands across their backs. Residents of Pennington are likely familiar with the sight of a troop moving across a lawn like a rolling wave, constantly chattering to one another as they dig for food. They play a vital role in pest control, rooting out grubs, beetles, and millipedes from the soil. While they are a delight to watch, they are wild animals with a strict social hierarchy and sharp teeth to match.

Living with Mongooses

While they look cute, Banded Mongooses are wild animals. To keep them (and your pets) safe, please follow these guidelines.

Coexistence Guidelines:

  • Do Not Feed Them: This is the most important rule. Feeding them human food causes overpopulation, aggression, and dependency.
  • Watch Your Pets: A troop of mongoose can be formidable. They will defend themselves aggressively if chased by a dog.
  • Secure Bins: They are opportunistic scavengers. Ensure your refuse bags are secured in bins to prevent them from scattering trash.
  • Natural Pest Control: Tolerate their digging! They are aerating your lawn and removing garden pests like Japanese Beetle larvae.
