Blue Duiker (Philantomba monticola)

The Forest's Vulnerable Ghost

The Blue Duiker is South Africa's smallest antelope and a secretive gem of Pennington's coastal forests. Named for the bluish sheen of its coat, it relies on dense undergrowth for camouflage. Due to habitat loss and poaching, the Blue Duiker is listed as a Vulnerable species in South Africa.

These tiny antelope are primarily frugivores, feeding on fallen forest fruits, flowers, and seeds. This makes them crucial "seed dispersers" for indigenous trees like the Coastal Red Milkwood. Spotting one is a rare privilege and highlights the importance of the Conservancy's efforts to protect our green belts.

Protecting Our Endangered Wildlife

Blue Duikers are highly susceptible to predation by domestic pets and illegal snaring.

How You Can Help:

  • Preserve Undergrowth: Do not clear-cut natural bush on your property. Duikers need dense cover to hide and sleep.
  • Contain Pets: Free-roaming dogs are a major threat. Keep pets secure at night and leashed in public spaces.
  • Drive with Caution: Be vigilant near green belts. Slow down to avoid collisions.
  • Report Snaring: If you see snares or suspicious activity in the bush, contact the Conservancy immediately.
