Alien Invasive Plants (AIPs) Identification

South African Invasive Alien Plant Legislation

Invasive plants threaten the KZN South Coast biodiversity by outcompeting indigenous flora. The Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act (Act 43 of 1983) and NEMBA regulations provide the legal framework for controlling these species. Below is a guide to identifying these plants in your garden.

  • CATEGORY 1 (Prohibited): Invader plant species which may not be grown and must be controlled immediately to protect local ecosystems.
  • CATEGORY 2 (Permit Required): Species with commercial value (e.g., timber) that may only be grown with a permit in demarcated areas.
  • CATEGORY 3 (Ornamental): Existing plants may remain but cannot be propagated, sold, or planted.
