Nkomba Conservation Area

From Rubble to Nature Reserve

Nkomba Sanctuary serves as a shining example of community-led rehabilitation. For years, this prime coastal land served as the local dumpsite. However, a dedicated group of Pennington residents envisioned a space where nature could reclaim its ground.

Through tireless clean-up efforts and rezoning, the land was transformed into a protected Conservation Area. Today, it is a biodiversity haven where coastal forest meets the beach, offering a sanctuary for birds, small mammals, and humans alike.

Discover Nkomba's Treasures

The Giant Sea Bean

Nkomba is home to South Africa's lowest recorded Sea Bean (Entada rheedii). These massive African Dream Beans are usually found further north, making our specimen a unique botanical attraction on the KZN South Coast.

Bird Watching Hotspot

With its mix of coastal bush and open clearings, Nkomba is an excellent spot for birding. Look out for the Green Malkoha, various Sunbirds, and the elusive Narina Trogon in the denser canopy.

A Living Classroom

The sanctuary offers an invaluable opportunity for environmental education. It features well-maintained walking trails, picnic benches, and educational signage about the indigenous flora.
