Pennington Main Beach & Coastal Management

Blue Flag Status & Conservation

Pennington's coastline is the heart of our village. Our premier beach, Pennington Main Beach, is proud to hold Blue Flag status, an international award recognizing highest standards in safety, cleanliness, and environmental management. It is one of the gems of the Umdoni coast.

The Conservancy runs extensive dune rehabilitation projects to prevent erosion. Our litter-free beach initiative ensures our shores remain pristine for the resident Oystercatchers and marine life.

Marine Life & Natural Spectacles

The Sardine Run

During winter (June/July), Pennington becomes a prime viewing spot for the Great Sardine Run. Vast shoals migrate past the KZN South Coast, attracting dolphins, sharks, and Cape Gannets.

Whale Watching

From Spring to early Summer, our coastline transforms into a "Humpback Highway." It is one of the best spots in South Africa to view migrating Humpback and Southern Right Whales breaching offshore.

Pennington Tidal Pool

Located at Main Beach, the Pennington Tidal Pool offers a safe, sheltered swimming experience for families and snorkelers to observe small marine life.
