Music Heals: 86-Year-Old Jazz Legend Jerry Kunene Dazzles at Relton Hall
PENNINGTON – Rain may have dampened the ground, but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits in Pennington this Sunday, January 25, 2026. In a moving display of talent and resilience, 86-year-old Jerry Kunene played his heart out, turning a grey afternoon into a vibrant celebration of life and music.
The event marked a significant milestone as the final function organized by Mary McKenzie for the Pennington Conservancy. While the day was originally scheduled to take place amidst the greenery of the Nkomba Bird Sanctuary, plans had to be adjusted at the eleventh hour. Although the area didn’t experience heavy downpours, a steady, normal rain that persisted overnight left the Sanctuary grounds too muddy for the gathering, forcing a move to the dry comfort of Relton Hall.
The change of venue did nothing to diminish the energy of the star attraction. Kunene, a seasoned musician who has traveled the globe, brought a lifetime of experience to the stage. Known for his extensive charity work in and around Durban, Kunene is a beloved figure not just for his talent, but for his character.
For Kunene, the performance was more than just entertainment; it was therapy. The musician, who is a teetotaler and does not drink, lost his wife of 55 years just a few years ago. He was heard telling guests on Sunday that “music heals him,” a sentiment clearly reflected in the passion of his performance.

Despite his age, Kunene’s energy was infectious, filling Relton Hall with soulful notes that captivated the audience. It was a fitting send-off for Mary McKenzie’s tenure with the Conservancy, combining community spirit, resilience against the weather, and the healing power of music.

As the final notes faded, it was clear that while the venue may have changed, the magic of the afternoon remained exactly where it was meant to be.
